Chira
05/15/06 Chira was found in the middle of the street crying with a Dalmatian standing over to guard her. She is full of parasites and very dehydrated. She is about 6-8wks old and probably a Chihuahua/Terrier Mix. Rescuers speculated that she might have been thrown out of a car window because she couldn’t walk very well when they found her, this could also be due to being dehydrated. She made it through the night and to our vet today. She has a slight temperature but a great appetite. She did have a small seizure today and can not stand up very well. She is on fluids and antibiotics and being watched closely right now. Her condition is very guarded. We have hope for little Chira. 5/17/06 Chira seems to be doing better today although not a whole lot of improvement. She is eating well, just not walking too much. She is probably blind. The vet thinks she has a condition called Hydrocephalus, which is fluid on the brain and isn’t a good prognosis. We will do all we can for this baby. She did have a seizure while they were giving her a bath but no other seizures today which is good. If she makes it, she will need a very special home with a very special patient heart. 5/18/06 Chira seems to be doing much better today and is still expelling parasites, this poor baby must have been loaded down with them. The vet now thinks she is deaf also. She is walking around but in a very confused state. She doesn’t have her siblings around her to teach her anything, which is critical with a deaf and blind puppy. She was taken off fluids today which is a good sign. A volunteer went to visit her today and this is what she wrote: “I went for about an hour - she's so tiny! I picked her up in her little blankie but she seems to like the touch of your bare hands, kept squirming until I was holding her in my hands with the blankie draped over her. She mostly slept, before I got there they said she had thrown up a buncha worms so hopefully they are coming out! She yawned a lot and liked to hear me talking/singing/humming to her and when I finally put her back she went over to the food dish and started eating...she's also off the IV so maybe she'll make it after all!” 5/19/06 Chira is howling away today! Seems to be ok. Not sure about her condition just yet, she might be able to see shadows. But she is walking around like a champ and is ready to leave the vet office. Her siblings were found in a ditch on 5/18 and brought to the vet on 5/19. There are 2 other girls and 2 boys. Chira and one of the girls, Mira, went to foster care today. 6/25/06: Chira and her siblings are all healthy and ready to find their own home! Two of the litter are deaf but otherwise normal bouncy puppies. Chira may or may not have the Hydrocephalus. If she does, it may never affect her. Currently she is a happy healthy puppy and is in need of her own home! She is crate trained. Chira loves people and likes to sit in your lap and give kisses.
See below for Chira's updated picture of her and Mira
So far, their vet bills are approximately $400 for Chira and her sibling Anabelle is $300.
